![]() ![]() You can use the options in the menubar to make the game window smaller or larger and configure various options within RetroArch. The Playnite window will minimize and the emulator window will appear, and RetroArch will automatically configure most controllers. Now just plug in any controller (or use the keyboard, if you want) and launch a game. Once you add multiple consoles, you might want to group your library by Platform, so Playnite will group your games by PC, SNES, GBA, etc.If nothing appears, try changing the search query by removing any special characters or region information. If this happens, just right-click on a game in your library, choose Edit, then Download Metadata > IGDB. Metadata can be a little tricky for some games and Playnite can sometimes download incorrect or incomplete data.Press import and Playnite will add the games to your library and attempt to download metadata for your games. If Playnite doesn't find all your games, make sure the ROMs are named cleanly - just have the game title and an optional region.Press Start Scan and Playnite will scan the directory for your games and list all the games it finds. Our created scanner will appear, with the correct settings and ROM path already loaded.Choose Add Saved Scanner and select the SNES (RetroArch) scanner we just created.Click the Gamepad Icon > Add Game > Emulated Game. We're finally ready to import our ROMs into Playnite. Leave the rest of the options at their defaults and press Save. For Scan with Emulator, the first dropdown should be RetroArch, and the second should be the Snes9x profile we just created for it.For Scan Folder, choose the directory holding your SNES ROMs.Give the config a nice descriptive name - I chose "SNES (RetroArch)" for mine.Under the left-side panel, choose Add and select the empty Config that appears.Within the same Configure Emulators window, choose the Auto-scan configurations tab.Now we need to add this profile as a "Scanner" for Playnite, so that when we add our ROMs they launch using the correct configuration. Playnite should fill in the details automatically, giving the profile the name Snes9x, the platform as Nintendo SNES, and some built in arguments. In RetroArch, we downloaded the Snes9x - Current core, not any of the Snes9x cores with a year in the name, so make sure you select the profile that is simply "Snes9x".At the bottom of the Prolfiles panel, choose Add, then scroll down until you find Built in: Snes9x.Now we need to add the Snes9x core we downloaded inside RetroArch as a Profile for the RetroArch emulator.Name the emulator RetroArch, choose the path to retroarch.exe in Installation Folder, and select RetroArch in the emulator specification dropdown. At the bottom of the leftmost pane, choose Add.Click on the Gamepad Icon > Library > Configure Emulators. We'll handle the rest inside of Playnite. That's all we have to do within RetroArch. The core Nintendo - SNES/SFC (Snes9x - Current) works best for me, so I'll select that and RetroArch will download and install it For this article, I'll be using SNES games as an example.Choose Download a Core and you'll be presented with a long list of cores.RetroArch defines its emulators as "cores" - for example the popular PSP emulator PPSSPP is a "core" inside RetroArch. ![]() Launch RetroArch and select the Load Core option from the main menu. However, we do have just a bit of work to do inside of RetroArch. It's all true, to an extent, so we'll be interacting with the actual RetroArch program as little as possible and will do most of our configuration in Playnite. RetroArch is notorious for being full of menus, inscrutable settings, and just being hard to use. It's best to use files dumped from your own copies of games, which is outside the scope of this article. NOTE: Downloading game ROMs from the internet is at best a legally gray area.ROM files for the console games you'd like to add, with each console's games in their own folder.I have my copy installed in E:/ROMS/Emulators/RetroArch I recommend installing RetroArch in a convenient location, maybe together with your ROM files.Playnite, which you should already have set up for your PC games. Now, let's take a look at adding some games from consoles like the SNES and Gameboy Advance using the popular emulator frontend, RetroArch. In previous articles, I covered merging your separate PC libraries together with Playnite and customizing Playnite with Themes and Add-ons like achievements and hiding duplicate games. ![]()
